What Is R-Value?

R-value measures a material’s resistance to heat flow. The higher the number, the better the material insulates. It’s a straightforward way to compare very different products, from fiberglass batts to rigid foam board.

Why Recommended R-Values Vary by Region

Building codes typically recommend different R-values depending on climate zone. Homes in colder northern climates need higher R-values in the attic and walls than homes in milder regions, since they’re fighting a bigger temperature difference for more of the year.

Common Insulation Types and Their R-Values per Inch

Fiberglass batts typically offer around R-3 to R-4 per inch, cellulose slightly more, and rigid foam board can reach R-5 to R-8 per inch depending on the type. Spray foam sits at the higher end, particularly closed-cell varieties.

Where Insulation Matters Most

Heat rises, so attics are usually the highest-priority area for insulation upgrades. After that, exterior walls, basement rims, and crawl spaces are the next places air leaks and heat loss commonly occur.

Diminishing Returns

Adding insulation beyond your climate zone’s recommended level provides smaller and smaller benefits for the cost. It’s usually more effective to seal air leaks first, then bring insulation up to the recommended level, rather than drastically overshooting it.
